This counter monument is a memorial and reminder of what happened at the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. If you were to flatten out the top half of the monument, it would mimic the shape of the race route for the 26.2 mile marathon. It is made out of 26.2 miles of thin mirrored strings of silver to create this piece. The events of that day were tragic, but should be remembered through this piece placed in the reflecting pool on the National Mall, where thousands of tourists worldwide visit each year. The monument is a full circle, however, you cannot see the bottom when it is sitting in the water. This represents the gravity of the event and how at first glance, you think the monument is just the top half, but there is so much more below the surface. Like the Boston bombing, the event did not just affect those in Boston, which is the obvious, but it affected the United States of America as a people.

This image should be vertical (but wouldn't upload that way) but it should be the view from the Lincoln Memorial.

These are the two individual pieces of the monument.

This shows the whole monument, however the bottom half will sit below the water, so you won't see it.
